◎ Hachiro's okonomiyaki
Kinton
Kimchi pork okonomiyaki
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
For Hachiro’s buta-tama, it may be worth starting with the classic version, without extra toppings. One diner reported that the generous layer of pork almost covered the surface of the batter; another praised the crisp cabbage, fluffy texture and aroma of shiso. Some found the sauce on the sweet side. It’s a straightforward favourite, with shiso adding a fragrant note—an appealing choice when you want the batter and its fillings to take centre stage.
For a dish with a character of its own, try the Hacchan Modan. Unlike a typical modan-yaki, it’s made by coating yakisoba noodles with dashi and egg and grilling them in an omelette-like style. It contains squid and pork and is also available as part of a lunch set. Diners who have ordered it mention its dashi flavour and substantial portion, making it one to consider if you’re in the mood for something different from okonomiyaki.
Negiyaki comes with a choice of toppings, including chicken harami with plenty of Kujo negi and sujigonegi-yaki made with domestically produced Japanese Black Wagyu. Both can be seasoned with ponzu, soy sauce or sauce. One diner particularly enjoyed the beef-tendon negiyaki; if the combination of Kujo negi and beef tendon appeals, it’s a tempting option. For noodles, the thin yakisoba is available with sauce, soy sauce or salt, while the thick-noodle mixed yakisoba includes squid, prawns and pork. There’s also a thick-noodle seafood yakisoba with prawns, octopus, squid and scallops. Diners who ordered yakisoba alongside okonomiyaki have also praised the flavour of the noodle dish’s sauce.
At lunchtime, set meals pair dishes such as buta-tama or ika-tama with white rice from Iga, miso soup and pickles. One diner also remarked on the quality of the rice, making this a welcome combination if you like to enjoy okonomiyaki with a bowl alongside it. In the evening, you could add a teppan-grilled dish beyond the flour-based favourites, such as octopus and scallops with garlic butter, or chicken seseri with yuzu kosho and ponzu. Draft beer and sake are also on the menu, so a meal here can extend beyond okonomiyaki to grilled dishes and drinks.
